daily meditation habit builder:
What's it take to Build a Daily Meditation practice?
Well, that is a great question. You may have heard thoughts on how meditation is a cure-all for everything that ails you – be it depression, anxiety, anger, hate, and every other disease and toxic emotion. It is true that meditation helps in many areas, but one thing is for sure it is NOT like an advil you pop only when you have a headache or a problem.
Meditation is more like brushing your teeth than taking an advil.
It is not a quick fix but with regular practice it becomes preventative medicine of sorts. Just like brushing your teeth, though, to avoid cavities one must brush daily, and not right before a dentist visit. Over time you create a healthy snowball effect that will ward of extreme emotions and how you deal with any emotions life throws your way.
So if you are like me, you may have never experienced meditation, or never even thought about trying it. If life has been going well you may have never thought twice about meditation. I needed a kick in the pants to look into it.
Or maybe you were attracted to meditation and tried it a few times. For whatever reason maybe it just never seemed to work and certainly didn’t stick or become a regular routine you do. Why is that?
There are many reasons you may have not tried it before and many reasons it may not have stuck if you did try it. These reasons are too deep to fully explore here, but the question that must be asked is… are you open to trying meditation for the first time or again?
If the answer is yes, how will you do it?
There are a million and one books on the topic. Several are good, so that is one way. Then there are meditation apps – both paid apps and free apps. I’ve used them and some are great! There are even online courses or meditation classes you can take. These can be helpful as well.
I think one of the big problems though is… how do you take this knowledge and turn it into a daily consistent habit?
Habit building is no easy task. I truly believe that there are a few things that help build habits. Things like…
- interest,
- commitment,
- quick-wins,
- accountability,
- collaboration,
- support,
- ability to ask questions and get answers,
- guidance from someone who’s more experienced than you,
- and being surrounded by like minded people.
These are some of the things I am trying to build into a new challenge I am building called The 30-Day Daily-Meditation Habit Builder Challenge. Yes, I know. That IS a mouthful. Well it is a new product and so maybe it will change with time, but for now I just want to get it out there. I want to get a few people joining me on PRACTICING daily for 30 days. Yes, this is a big commitment, but it takes 20-30 days to build a habit that sticks. I want you to accomplish the goal of building that habit if you are serious about wanting a daily meditation habit.
What Good Is a Daily Meditation Habit and why would I want a meditation habit builder?
The benefits and experience is probably different for each person but for me, I used my own daily meditation to help beat my struggles with depression and keep it at bay for a long time. I’ve found it helped me find a longer lasting happiness than my typical day-to-day happiness pre-meditation habit. It’s helped me be calmer with my kids, wife, friends, family, and clients. It’s helped me try to seek understanding of those I disagree with instead of writing them off or wanting to prove they are wrong. I’d bet it is adding years to my life. All great things, but you might find it helps you in different ways.
Mayo Clinic put out the article – Meditation: A simple, fast way to reduce stress that covers a lot of great ideas about meditation and they are a trusted source in the medical community so don’t just take my word for it.
HealthLine also put out a good article discussing the science behind meditation in the article titled – 12 Science-Based Benefits of Meditation. I’d recommend reading both to get more insight on why I am so passionate about meditation.
WHAT WE PRACTICE GROWS STRONGER
What are the habits, emotions, and practices that you want to grow, strengthen, or control better?
This is a list of items you can work on with meditation. Things like letting go of judgements and learning to be more accepting. Letting go of anger and finding more peace. The list goes on and on, but these are some of the things you can work on – learning to cope better with the emotions on the left in the tan box and finding ways to practice and fuel the emotions on the right in the blue box.
There are not really “good” or “bad” emotions but rather how we react, respond, or act on these emotions which tend to paint them as “good” or “bad”. Meditation can help you explore these emotions better and how you put them to use.
Judgements | Acceptance |
Anger | Peace |
Frustration | Satisfaction |
Anxiety | Calm |
Fear | Trust |
Hate | Love |
Shame | Empathy |
Blame | Forgiveness |
Greed | Generosity |
Despair | Hope |
Craving | Contentedness |
Being Mean | Kindness |
Misery | Joy |
Ungratefulness | Gratitude |
Self-Centered | Considerate |
Self-Loathing | Self-Compassion |
